The financial report was reviewed and is on file at the ACE office.
- DSVS (Domestic and Sexual Violence Services) educational outreach programs
Allison and Moe reviewed the work that DSVS is doing in the schools and county in order to promote healthy relationships and prevent violence. They reported that DSVS has received a grant to create model curriculum and lessons for rural areas. Urban areas already have lessons and curriculum designed for their demographics. Moe Kampfe has been hired to help develop the rural lessons and curriculum and she noted that the majority of the schools DSVS has been working with are also ACE members. The grant will pay teacher leaders to help make sure the lessons and curriculum are educationally sound. The will also map the lessons and curriculum to fit a variety of ACE curriculum models found on the ACE web site. Some of the areas of concern will continue to involve bullying, sexting, teen dating, bullying, and healthy relationships. They would like to pilot eight 45-minute grades 7 through 9 lessons in ten schools during the spring of the 2011 - 2012 school year. Starting in 2003 DSVS has already been working with ACE schools in a variety of classes including English, social studies, health and P.E. and others. The grant would pay each of the ten lead teachers $750 plus expenses to work on, model and evaluate the curriculum and lessons. They felt that the two October "MEA" days would be place to start the training and asked those present to let them know if they would recommend a teacher that would work with them and their school.
- A preliminary expense report was passed out and reviewed as well as the enrollment and evaluation summary from the day. Those present who attended the workshop felt the two presenters did a great job. ACE's goal of continuing professional development was met and those attending liked the ability to work with others and produce a unit plan using Understanding by Design. The units plans and other information on the day have been posted on the ACE web site.
- 2011 - 2012 PIR days...Andrea Fischer
Andrea said she has been making some contacts for next year's ACE PIR days and suggested several national speakers, including some motivational speakers, to the board. Andrea said she is looking for some direction from the board. Several suggestions were given to Andrea. The board felt that, if at all possible, the common core standards should be included in the presentations. Jerry suggested that bus driver training once again be offered at the September 12 PIR day. Andrea said she would also look into possible sites for the two PIR days.
- 2011 - 2012 Dues / Budget
The board said they would look a budget for 2011 - 2012 in the near future. Al Sipes said he would look into insurance for Andrea, the board, and the ACE car. Al also said he has visited with Jeanne Carroll about the hours she presently spends for ACE business. He said he would post something about the clerk for ACE for next year.
- Technology consortium...Al and Trent
Trent was not present so Al reviewed items covered at the last technology consortium meeting. Jerry said he would continue to try to get information on the technology trainers that ACE sponsored in order to get it posted on the ACE web site. Jerry reported that he attended the last advanced group meeting in Lockwood and was impressed in the work being done. Promethean software would need to be installed before anyone could use their whiteboards in the manner that the trainers do. A list of the trainers as well as meeting notes from the January 11 meeting was distributed and is on file at the ACE office.
- 6 + 1 Writing train the trainer workshop
Jerry reported that the team of Lorrie Henrie-Koski, Kay Faust, and Jeri Heard have been registered and all arrangements have been made to send the three of them to the 6 + 1 Trait Writing Institute for Presenters in Gleneden Beach, Oregon on June 20 - 22, 2011.
- National ASCD conference
Jerry and Andrea reported on the San Francisco conference and expressed their hope that the ACE board continues to offer scholarships for ACE members to attend. Over 9,700 from 47 countries attended the conference.
- MAP Testing
Custer indicated that they wish to begin MAP testing in the 2011 - 2012 school year. Jerry said he sent an email asking if any other schools wished to start at that time or were interested in participating in the beginner workshop that has been offered the past two years. No response has been received at this time.
- Gail Richardson
Gail reported that the ELE's have been completed for science, math, communication arts, information literacy/library media and technology and have been posted on the ACE web site. ACE is overdue for revisions in work place competency and the arts which were done in 2005 and scheduled for revision in 2009-10 and 2010 - 2011 respectively, but have been put on hold because the OPI revisions were to have been completed on both areas by now and have not been. Gail also said her primary concern is social studies which ACE revisited in 2006 and should have on the docket by now, but OPI does not even have a specialist yet to address this area. She said if ACE waits for OPI our document would be at least seven or eight years old. Gail felt ACE should revisit social studies next year no matter what OPI does.
Gail passed out the proposed OPI schedule but said that in her conversation with Colet Bartow she was told that everything was now on hold until after the legislative session. Colet also said OPI is on wait to see what the final decision will be on adopting the National Common Core Curriculum Standards. The "feeling" is that the adoption is in the wind depending on how Indian Education for All can be worked into and through it. The National Common Core Standards will affect communication arts and math, at least for now. Chances are very good that OPI will not have the National Common Core Standards out to schools with the infusion of IEA for at least a couple years. It will, initially, affect reading and math. Andrea added that her feelings were that ACE should not wait for OPI, but proceed, using a process more on the line with Jim Staab's work so that ACE will stay ahead of the game, and not fall behind.
- Next ACE board meeting was scheduled for April 27,2011 at 9:00 A.M. at the Billings Hotel and Convention Center.
