9:00 A. M. @ Billings Hotel and Convention Center
Attending were ACE board members Andy Begger, Tim Dolphay, David Huether, Mark Brajcich and director Jerry Scott. Guests attending were Jennifer Hickok, Fritzie Walker, Stephanie Long, Deani Kirkness, Luke Enemy Hunter and Lanny Stene.
- In the absence of “the Godfather”, Mark Brajcich called the meeting to order at 9:05 AM. All present introduced themselves.
- Dave Huether moved for the approval of September 27, 2006 minutes with the correction that “Bob adorned the meeting at 10:40 A.M” to read “adjourned,” although all present truly felt Bob did “adorned the meeting”. Andy Begger made the second and the motion passed 4 – 0.
- The financial report was reviewed. Jerry reported that all members have now paid their dues. Tim Dolphay moved to accept the report with Any Begger seconding the motion. The motion passed 4 – 0.
- The Billings Schools were scheduled once again to visit about Indian Education Curriculum. No one was present. The board felt Ace should not schedule them again unless they plan to be present,
- Jerry reviewed the September 11, 2006 PIR Day passing out the schedule, attendance, and evaluations for the bus driver workshop. 54 people from 10 schools attended with an average evaluation score of 4.5 with 5 being the highest. Dave Peil will once again set up the March 5 bus driver training. All present expressed that this was one of the best PIR trainings ACE put on.
- A discussion took place on planning for March 5, 2007 PIR day. Jerry reported that he attended Wayne Callendar’s session on Response To Intervention (RTI) during the MCEL conference and felt he was a good presenter with valuable information. Jerry said that Callendar has committed to do a presentation at the March 5 PIR day. Others present who attended Callendar’s sessions agreed. Lanny Stene said MCASE would chip in at least $650 to have Callendar present on the March 5 PIR day. Lanny felt Callendar would be most effective if he presented the full day to the K – 6 teachers. The board directed Jerry to contract Callendar and see what format for the day he feels is best. The question then would be what to do for the 7 – 12 teachers. Some felt we should stay with the same format as in September with a number of sectionals offered. Others felt the K – 6 teachers should also be given options and not just RTI with Callendar. Various other speakers and workshops were mentioned including Ron Taylor who worked at Red Lodge, Mark Feeling, B. McGarvie, etc. Fritzie Walker said that Laurel would like to have options and not just a main speaker all day. She brought up several names of speakers and will send them to Jerry. After much discussion the board felt ACE should continue with having one main speaker and several workshops for the September PIR days and have 3 – 4 speakers doing half-day presentations as an option for the March PIR day. Jerry will continue to work on the March 5 speakers.
- Jennifer Hickok gave a power point presentation on Pryor’s gear up program, handing out information and responding to questions. PASS stands for Parents of Academically Successful Students. It trains parents and teachers to work together to ensure the educational success of every child. Those schools participating in PASS have seen an increase in high school graduation rates as well as students enrolling in high level learning institutes. Hardin, Lame Deer and Pryor began the program in August of 2005. Browning and St. Regis were selected to participate in 2006. Luke Enemy Hunter presented more information on the situation at Pryor and other reservation schools. More information can be obtained by contacting Jennifer at Pryor.
- Deani Kirkness presented three options as a beginning point for an ACE web page. She would charge $400 to set up the page plus $20 per hour for any future work on the site. She suggested ACE try to obtain their own web URL by getting a hosting server for about $110 per year. Andy Begger moved ACE hire Deani to develop and maintain an ACE web site getting their own server. Dave Huether seconded the motion which passed 4 – 0. Jerry will continue to work with Deani and send out information on the site as it is developed.
- Jerry reported that the first Indian Education for All grant session was held at MSU-B on October 7. Dr. Jeannine Pease did a super job with the group. The next session is scheduled for November 18th.
- Jerry presented a proposed application form for the national ASCD conference to be held in Anaheim, CA. He was given approval to send the form out to all ACE members.
- Jerry reported on the October 11 ACE technology grant workshop on producing videos.
- The next board meeting was set for November 29 at 9:00 AM in the Billings Hotel and Convention Center. The meeting was adjourned at 10:50 AM
