September 28, 2005 ACE Board Meeting
9:00 A. M. @ Billings Hotel and Convention Center
Present for the meeting were ACE board members Dave Huether, Al Sipes, Andy Begger, Bob Barnes, Tim Dolphay, Mark Brajcich, and director Jerrry Scott. Guests present were Gail Richardson, Brenda Koch, Jeff Bermes, Linda DeCock, and Lanny Stene.
- President Bob Barnes called the meeting to order at 9:10 A.M. and had everyone introduce himself or herself.
- Dave Huether made the motion to approve the August 31, 2005 minutes. Tim Dolphay seconded the motion and it passes 6 – 0.
- After review, Al Sipes moved to approve the finance report as printed. Dave Huether seconded the motion and it passed 6 – 0.
- Jerry reviewed the attendance and evaluation summary from the Barbara Coloroso September 12 PIR day. These items were already mailed to all ACE member schools.
- A discussion was held on the March 6, 2006 and the two PIR days in 06 – 07. Bob said the dates for the next PIR days would be March 6, 2006, September 11, 2006, March 5, 2007, and September 10, 2007. The discussion concluded that bringing in a national speaker, such as Jesus Villahermosa and Barbara Coloroso, is only possible when schools pool their money. The board felt that ACE now has a budget to afford to bring in national speakers and should continue with this practice. Lanny Stene spoke highly of Dr. M. D. Levine from the Clinical Center for the Study of Development and Learning in the University of North Carolina. Information can be found at allkindsofminds.org. Dr. Levine does workshops on the brain and learning as it applies to all students. After further discussion Al Sipes moved to have Jerry contact Dr. Levine to present at on of our PIR days. Dave Huether seconded the motion and it carried 6 – 0. The board mentioned that if the numbers grew too large, ACE might look at offering two speakers at two locations who would “flip flop” morning and afternoon sessions. Those attending the meeting brought up several names and Jerry will contact those as well and bring information to the next meeting.
- The board felt ACE should continue to offer alternative training opportunities during MEA days. Jerry will set up several workshops during those dates and get information out to the members.
- The 2005 – 2006 curriculum review schedule was presented to those in attendance. K – 12 Math will be reviewed on October 4th from 9 – 4 at DJ’s in Laurel. K – 12 Social Studies will be reviewed in the winter and K – 12 Science in the spring, after OPI completes it review of the Science Standards.
- Jerry reported on the September 29 new member training.
- The board felt that the possibility of offering to send ACE members to national ASCD conference in Chicago this April was a good idea. More information will be presented at the next meeting.
- Mark Brajcich brought up the topic of alternative assessment tools, such as the MAP computerized testing. He felt ACE might become involved in offering such an instrument because a consortium might bring the price to an affordable level for all sized schools. Discussion followed with those familiar with MAP and other assessment tools. More discussion will be brought up at a future meeting.
- Don Bidwell, Busby Superintendent, would like to join ACE. He will be invited to attend the October meeting.
- Jerry asked if the board would split costs with his County Superintendent’s office in order for him to attend the National Rural Education Conference in Tucson, AZ. Mark Brajcich moved to allow Jerry to attend the conference splitting cost with his other office. Tim Dolphay seconded the motion and it passed 6 – 0.
- Next meeting was set for October 26th at 9:00 AM in the Billings Hotel and Convention Center
- The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 A.M.
